Clima ecuatorial caluroso y húmedo todo el año. Las lluvias son regulares todo el año y a veces violentas. Las precipitaciones (tormentas) son más importantes de agosto a noviembre en la costa oeste de Malasia y con frecuencia vienen acompañadas de vientos violentos. De diciembre a febrero, el clima de la costa este es particularmente lluvioso, con inundaciones frecuentes y lluvias diluvianas. La temperatura del mar es de 28° C durante todo el año en Malasia.
